How To Turn A Bad Morning Around And Boost Your Mood
Jump into a cold shower.
There’s a reason you see every influencer doing cold plunges these days. It’s because it actually works!
Jumping into a cold shower may seem like a miserable start to your morning. But if you just try it out you will find that it will make you feel awake and super alert afterwards. Not only will it give you a jolt of energy, but it will also surely improve your mood.
There are a million benefits to turning the water on cold in the morning. They range from improved circulation, reduced stress, and improvement in skin and hair health. To enhanced immune function, improved respiratory function, and a healthy lymphatic system.
So next time you wake up tired, groggy, and in a mood jump straight into a cold shower for a few seconds. I can guarantee it will jolt you right out of the funk you’re in!
Play some music or a good podcast.
You know when you hear a really good song and it just puts you in the best mood? Start out your mornings by playing music you just can’t help but sing to! That’s for sure one of my fave tips for how to boost your mood in the morning!
Playing the kind of music you want your mood to be, works. (It’s science, I swear!). So if you want to change your attitude in the morning and feel better about being up early, play some happy and upbeat songs!
But if you aren’t too keen on blasting music in the mornings, or you just don’t want to piss off your roommates, try putting on a podcast. Either way, listening to something that you enjoy will drastically improve your mood. Changing the trajectory of your whole day!
Now tell me, what’s your favorite pump-up song? I’m always in the market for new music!
Drink plenty of water.
If you don’t already have an emotional support water bottle then what are you doing?
Keep a bottle or glass by your bed and drink some water first thing in the morning. During the night your organs get dehydrated, so your body needs hydration. Drinking water first thing also increases your metabolism which helps you maintain your energy levels throughout the day.
Plus drinking water first thing in the AM will help wake you up and jumpstart your day. If you want to get fancy with it you can add some lemon to your water. But plain works just as well.
We all know that drinking water is important and has a ton of health benefits. So might as well start off your day with a big tall glass.
Not to mention, nothing will get you out of bed faster than having to pee! So drink up, it will make you a more productive person 😆
Get some morning sunlight.
If you are looking to boost your mood in the morning then getting in some sunlight as soon as you wake up is the answer.
Getting sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm and boosts your mood by increasing the production of serotonin. Exposure to natural light in the mornings has been proven to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in people.
Sunlight also gives us energy and helps us synthesize vitamin D. Which just means your body makes vitamin D. A few years ago I was low in vitamin D and getting supplements for it literally changed my life. Vitamin D helps with immune function and bone health, but it also greatly helps with energy levels!
If you live somewhere with limited sunlight you can use a light therapy lamp. But if you have access to natural sunlight then get outside and take in those rays!
Stretch or go on a short walk.
Trust me after laying in bed for 8 hours your body is just dying to move around. Try doing some stretching or going on a short walk early into your day.
Moving your body will help wake you up both mentally and physically. And it’s a great way to get your blood flowing.
Go on a short walk outside if you can. But if you are more of an indoor person in the mornings then just follow along to a stretching video on YouTube. This feels so good to do in the morning, you literally won’t be able to be in a bad mood after!
This is one of my favorite videos. It only takes 10 minutes and feels literally the best after a long restful night of sleep 🙂 plus… even though you probably shouldn’t, you can even do it in bed.
Try to avoid social media.
Since I started working from home, for years I would lay around scrolling on my phone every morning between 7-9 am. Then I would get up, and it took me another hour or 2 to feel like I was finally awake.
Thats insane!
I knew I had to make a change. So I started getting right out of bed and stretching instead of going on my phone. And let me tell you, I’m a whole new person now. And you can be too, if you put away the phone early in the mornings!
Starting your day off on your phone seems harmless, but it cuts so much time into your day. It can also stress you out or overstimulate you. Plus starting your day off unproductive leads to an overall reduction in productivity throughout the day.
So try it out. Leave the phone alone. And see if you feel better overall. If not, well you can go right back to your morning scrolling
Make a healthy nutritious breakfast.
I don’t know about you, but nothing boosts my morning quite like some good food. If you’re a morning eater, try opting for healthy options whenever you can.
Meal prepping is the best way to encourage yourself to eat healthy. Think through the food options that you like and come up with a healthy meal you can quickly make every day.
Smoothies are super great. I pack individual zip lock baggies filled with fruit and greens that are pre-portioned and use one each morning. I just mix them with almond milk and boom, good to go!
Think of it this way, if you plan out a healthy breakfast that you can eat every day, then that’s 1/3 of your meals that are guaranteed to be healthy!
Create a to do list.
Don’t underestimate the power of a to-do list! Creating a to-do list is super powerful because it creates structure in your day and you don’t have to waste time thinking about what to do next.
If you get overwhelmed by your list of to-do’s, assign them a number. It can either be in order of importance, or if you have trouble deciding then just order them randomly. Now go down the list and work on them one by one.
Another hack is to add things to your to-do list that are super simple. Like brush your teeth, or make your bed. This way it gives you something to cross off early in the morning making you motived to continue crossing things off!
If you’re looking for a really simple to-do list App, try MinimaList. It’s straightforward to use and has a really minimalistic interface. It’s the one I use literally every day, and I swear by it!
Remember - A good morning starts with a good evening routine.
Having hacks to turn a bad morning into a good one is great. But don’t forget that you realistically won’t have a good morning unless you get enough sleep.
This is why you need a solid nighttime routine. A nighttime routine sets you up for success. It lets your body know that it’s time to go to sleep. This will make it way easier to be consistent with your bedtime and wake up on time every single morning!
Create a simple nighttime wind-down routine and stick to it. And it will make waking a breeze every single day! Make sure to get plenty of rest so you can wake up every morning feeling refreshed and excellent!
BTW if winding down for the night is hard for you, try making your bed super cozy and irresistible with these tips and tricks for a comfy bed!
So if you’re looking for how to boost your mood in the morning, remember to start setting yourself up for success in the evenings!
