9 Safety Tips If You’re A Woman Living Alone
1. Invest In Tools To Make Your Home Safer
Investing in tools such as door stoppers can go a long way to make you feel safer home alone. There are tons of safety tools out there now that will make your home feel more secure, but which ones are worth your money?
A door stopper is one of my favorite tools to use. Make sure to use them on doors, and also on sliding balcony doors. Another great tip is to go to home depot and buy a stick, and cut it to the length of your window. That way no one can slide the window open from the outside. It’s cheap and will make you sleep easy at night!
2. Set Up Cameras To Face Doors/Windows
Cameras are a super useful took and are relatively cheap to have no a days. While paying for a Ring subscription can be a bit annoying, setting up the cameras to face your doors and windows goes far in making you feel at peace.
Bonus tip, if you live in an apartment and don’t want to drill a hole into your door this anti-theft camera mount is a great alternative!
3. Share Your Location With A Trusted Person
Sharing your location with friends or family is a great way to keep track of each other. Also make sure to let people know when you are going on a hike, on a date, or anywhere you may lose cell phone service for a bit.
BTW, if you or the person you want to share your location with don’t have an iPhone, you can still share locations on Google Maps!
4. Put Bells On All Doors And Windows
Attaching small bells or chimes to your doors and windows can also be a great way to stay safe. That way you can clearly hear when someone opens a door or window and stay vigilent about making sure no one has access to your home without you knowing.
You can get Ring chimes on Amazon that will send alerts to your phone, or you can set up a cheaper alternative with just regular bells.
5. Don't Give Out Your Address Or Neighborhood
This one is a given, but ladies, don’t give out your address or neighborhood to people you don’t know well! Also, make sure to be conscious about what you post on social media. Don’t post photos that show out of your windows, or around your apartment complex or street.
6. Sleep Next To Your Car Keys
A long time ago I read this tip on Reddit and have been doing it every night since. Sleeping next to your car keys can be a good idea if your car is close enough outside your window, so in case of an emergency, you can sound the alarm. This can help alert neighbors in case something goes wrong during the night. It’s a quick but useful tip that costs no money, but can be life-saving in case of emergency!
7. Leave On The Lights & TV When You're Out
OOOOF, I know the energy bills do stack up, but leaving on a light and the TV playing when you go out can be a good idea. It makes it look and sound like people are home and can be a detourant for possible break-ins.
Overhead lighting typically uses more electricity than a floor lamp or night light, so investing in those can be a good idea to bring down the energy bill. A speaker also works well in place of a TV, which can also be more cost-effective!
8. Know Your Neighbors
Nowadays people don’t get quite as friendly with their neighbors as they did back in the day. But it’s still a good idea to be friendly and get to know at least one of your neighbors. Not only is it a good idea to have someone to share information with in case anything happens. But you can also take turns watching over each other’s homes if you are away.
Plus in case of emergency, someone you have at least a bit of a relationship with can be helpful and provide help, or just look out for you. Building that relationship can be difficult, but start by smiling at your neighbors, saying hi, or doing a kind gesture for them. It will go a long way in making you feel more at home and safer in your neighborhood, and is one of my best tips for living alone as a female!
9. Check The Vibes Of The Neighborhood Before Moving
If you can, always check out the vibes of the neighborhood before moving in. Drive around and look at the people that live there and the stores and businesses nearby. Another good tip is to google the area and take a look on Reddit to see if anyone has anything to say about it.
If you are living in an apartment, also make sure to look up the complex, read the reviews, and make sure they have good building management. It can really go a long way into making sure you are living in a good, safe location you feel comfortable in especially when living alone as a female!
